Benevis provides quality, affordable dental care year-round to families with all forms of insurance, including Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) plans; however, the organization recognizes that many patients in the communities its dental homes serve and her family were uninsured and unable to afford routine care. Research shows that children from low-income families are twice as likely to have untreated tooth decay than children from higher-income families. Additionally, cost is the top reason for not visiting the dentist, regardless of income, age, or source of dental benefits.Addressing these treatment challenges and barriers to care is core to Benevis' mission, which is why the organization has pioneered Share a Smile Day for the past eight years, providing much-needed dental relief to more than 3,000 patients in 13 states and Washington, D.C.

“Access to dental care is not equal across the United States due to geographic and socioeconomic barriers. Benevis is committed to providing essential oral care to disadvantaged families, helping to create a nation of happy, healthy smiles. “We are honored to host the ninth Share a Smile Day is held annually to expand access to high-quality oral health care in the communities we serve. “

With a 20-year history, Benevis provides exceptional oral care to approximately 5 million children and adults, 82% of whom are enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP programs. Dental care and orthodontics organizations are also unique among the 18 percent of dental providers that manage more than 100 children's Medicaid visits annually. However, as the COVID-19 public health emergency ends, the elimination of Medicaid continuous enrollment provisions has exacerbated the dental coverage divide, leaving more than 20 million Medicaid beneficiaries without health insurance. Of the 21 states reporting age breakthroughs, about 4 in 10 children dropped out of school.

“Millions of American families now have little to no dental health insurance because they lack Medicaid eligibility and enrollment opportunities,” said Dr. Dale Mayfield, chief dental officer at Benevis. “This year’s Shared Smile Day comes at a time when patients are being deprived of oral health care. Moments that matter. We're proud to offer dental relief to children and their families, helping them create new paths to insurance coverage.

Share a Smile Day is open to children under 18 years of age and adults without Medicaid or other forms of dental insurance. Major markets including Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Texas, South Carolina and others will participate. Dental treatment provided free of charge includes dental exams, limited emergency care, extractions and restorative care, and limited cleaning services.
