College of the Mainland to launch dental hygiene associate degree

Mainland College is now accepting applications for its new associate degree program in dental hygiene, which will begin this fall.

The program will provide students with the opportunity to learn comprehensive dental care, according to an April 23 news release from the college.

According to the press release, the program will provide the following:

  • Small class sizes allow personal attention between faculty and students
  • New facilities including laboratories and clinics equipped with professional-grade equipment
  • Provide opportunities for students to complete clinical treatment hours on campus

Emily Falls, director of COM's dental hygiene program, said the program will allow recent graduates to maintain jobs in high-demand fields, especially in the Gulf Coast region. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job opportunities in this field will grow 9 percent in the Gulf Coast region from 2021 to 2031, according to a news release.

The program is under review for preliminary accreditation status by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. COM communications officer Monique Sennet said in an email on April 24 that so far, the CODA team had conducted a site visit to the project in early April but had not made any recommendations.

The program's accreditation status will be determined in August, according to the release.

Reference notes

This program is very important to COM because there is a great need for oral health practitioners in our community,” Falls said in the release. “The students and clinics on campus are going to play a really critical role in meeting some of the diverse oral health care needs.”
