Land of Smiles program brightens student smiles in Morrison – Shaw Local

MORRISON – Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation concluded its spring Land of Smiles tour at Northside Elementary School in Morrison on Wednesday, April 17.

Land of Smiles is a free, dynamic educational program designed to provide children with information about basic oral health habits. The program is designed not only to educate, but also to entertain. Characters such as Captain Super Smile, Terri Tooth Fairy, Toothpick and their mischievous nemesis Kaz Cavett engage young audiences while delivering important messages about oral hygiene, nutrition and regular dental checkups.

Tooth decay remains a major chronic disease affecting children. Research shows that 22 percent of Illinois third-graders have untreated cavities. In an ongoing effort to address and curb childhood tooth decay, the Illinois Delta Dental Foundation's free “Land of Smiles” program is held twice a year.

In the first half of 2024, the “Land of Smiles” will benefit more than 30,000 students in kindergarten through third grade in nearly 150 schools in Illinois. Every student who attends the Smile Nation performance receives a free oral health kit that includes a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss, as well as bilingual oral health tips outlining how students should care for their teeth.

The Land of Smiles program demonstrates Delta Dental of Illinois' commitment to improving the oral health of Illinois' youth. Over the past 14 years, the program has reached 573,352 students in 1,034 elementary schools in Illinois.
