NEWARK, N.J. — A New Jersey nonprofit will provide free dental services to underserved children at its locations in Newark, Broomfield and Trenton to celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month.

The KinderSmile Foundation will launch its 2024 Give Kids a Smile campaign on Friday, February 2. Learn more here.

This year, the annual effort will continue throughout February thanks to a grant from the Delta Dental Foundation of New Jersey.

KinderSmile has offices in the following locations:

  • Newark – 1 Avon Avenue
  • Broomfield – 10 Broad Street
  • Trenton – 101 N. Broad Street

Organizers hope to provide preventive dental care to hundreds of children in New Jersey during this year’s outreach event.

Michal Herman, chief operating officer of the KinderSmile Foundation, said: “Last year, during the Give Kids a Smile campaign, we provided care to more than 730 underserved children and an additional 700 children in schools and community centers. Oral health education.

According to the nonprofit, many dental problems are preventable. But dental disease remains the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States.

Due to dental problems, it will not only affect your health. The nonprofit said children with poor oral health have higher rates of absenteeism from school and poorer academic performance.

KinderSmile said action is critical to achieving “oral health equity” in New Jersey as many low-income people from “marginalized communities” face higher rates of dental disease and lack access to health care.

Meanwhile, the nonprofit added that the state continues to make progress on this front:

“In 2023, New Jersey expanded Medicaid coverage (NJ FamilyCare) to all eligible children regardless of immigration status, but families continue to struggle with trust and process. New Jersey Administration for FamilyCare Volunteers and representatives from medical organizations will be on-site at all three locations to help families register and navigate the Medicaid application process in an attempt to obtain medical and dental coverage for their children's future.
