Japanese team to research pet periodontal disease

Since not all dogs and cats can be easily coaxed into assisting with brushing after a day of eating, a team of researchers from Japan will rely on science and technology to get the job done.

Osaka University agrees to conduct joint research with Anicom General Insurance, Anicom Advanced Medical Research Institute, and Earth Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. to prevent periodontal disease in pets and improve their intestinal tracts using advanced technology called MA-T (Matching Transformation System) environment.

The joint study will collect data on pets' oral bacteria and investigate the use of MA-T to develop preventive and therapeutic methods to combat periodontal disease.

MA-T is an on-demand aqueous solution of chlorine dioxide that can be safely used for a variety of antimicrobial activities, even in the presence of high levels of organic compounds. MA-T is effective in controlling infections, inactivating viruses and killing a variety of bacteria.

The organization said the effectiveness of using gels containing MA-T for oral care in humans has been demonstrated. Now, they will investigate whether the same approach can be applied to improving pets' oral care to prevent not only the onset of periodontal disease, but also the onset of other diseases associated with it.

By analyzing its own pet insurance claims data, Anicom said dogs with periodontal disease were 1.4 times more likely to develop various diseases within a year of diagnosis than dogs without dental problems. They also stated that dogs with periodontal disease were four times more likely to develop heart disease and five times more likely to develop kidney disease than dogs without oral problems.

Likewise, cats with periodontal disease have a 2.7-fold increased risk of developing periodontal disease in the following year. Anicom says cats with periodontal disease are 3.5 times more likely to develop kidney disease and 3.2 times more likely to develop heart disease.

In the joint study, data on pets' oral microbiota will be collected to identify preventive and therapeutic approaches using MA-T. Anicom's insurance claims data will also be used to understand the impact of oral care on other pet diseases. The research aims to extend the lives of pets by protecting them from periodontal disease.
