New AI model for screening gingivitis developed in Hong Kong

An international study led by researchers The School of Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong has developed and tested a new artificial intelligence model that can screen for gingivitis, or inflammation of the gums, based on images inside the mouth.


The study, one of the first to explore the use of artificial intelligence to spot gingivitis, used 550 images of gums with varying degrees of inflammation.

The novel artificial intelligence model was able to identify signs of inflammation on the gums, such as redness, swelling and bleeding, with an accuracy of more than 90%.

Researchers from the Department of Computer Science of Chu Hai College of Hong Kong, the School of Information Engineering of Guangdong University of Technology, and the School of Dentistry of the National University of Malaysia also participated in the study.
