Alex Rodriguez Reveals Early-Stage Gum Disease Diagnosis

Alex Rodriguez revealed on Wednesday's morning show that he has been diagnosed with early-stage gum disease.

Rodriguez, 47, joined CBS News hosts to make the announcement and discuss the importance of dental health.

“Looks can be deceiving,” the former Yankees star said in response to a compliment about his smile at the beginning of the show.

I just recently went to the dentist and wasn't thinking about any gum disease,” Rodriguez said on the show. The dentist told me the news, and then I found out that more than 65 million Americans have this gum disease.”

The diagnosis inspired Rodriguez to partner with OraPharma to raise awareness about dental health.

He urged viewers to be proactive about dental hygiene. He continued: “It's very important for everyone who watches the game, for all Americans, to take care of their teeth.”

Nearly half of Americans over the age of 30 have some form of gum disease, with the average prevalence higher among those over 65, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Minnesota Timberwolves co-owner doesn't know what led to his diagnosis, but explained that the problem is “pervasive in our black and brown communities, especially in my Latino community.”

Rodriguez said he never chewed tobacco while playing in the MLB, but he was an avid consumer of sunflower seeds.

He recalled one of his mentors, Tony Gwynn, whom Rodriguez called “one of the greatest, greatest icons in baseball,” who, according to Rodriguez, was “smoking a lot.” Later died.

Rodriguez shared a clip of the episode on his Instagram account on Wednesday.

“I'm happy to be back in my hometown for an interview about my new campaign with OraPharma and arestin_pi,” he wrote in the caption.
